Beach rash: sun, sand, and salt all in one

September beach days on Delmarva are some of the best of the year - but the combination of sun, salt, sand friction, and leftover sunscreen can leave you with a rash you did not expect. Here is what it is and what helps.

    September 2025

September on the Shore still has plenty of beach days left, and the combination of strong late-summer sun, salt water drying on skin, and sand rubbing against sunscreened arms and legs adds up to a rash that shows up hours after you are already home. It is not an allergy - it is irritation from heat, salt, and friction working together.

What it looks and feels like

    • Red, itchy patches where skin rubbed against skin or clothing - inner thighs, underarms, waistband, behind the knees.
    • A hot, tight feeling that gets worse as the salt residue dries on the skin.
    • Sometimes tiny bumps or a prickly heat sensation where sweat and sunscreen clogged pores.

    What to do right now

    • Rinse off salt water as soon as you leave the beach - a cool shower is better than a hot one.
    • Pat dry gently; do not scrub. Apply a plain, fragrance-free moisturizer within three minutes of getting out of the shower.
    • For friction rash: a thin layer of zinc oxide or a barrier cream on the affected spots.
    • For itchy patches: 1% hydrocortisone once or twice a day for a couple of days.
    • Stay out of the sun on the rash until it calms - re-exposure to salt and UV will restart the irritation.

    Local note

Assateague and the Delaware beaches have coarser sand than the Bay side, which means more friction on skin during a long walk. Ocean water is saltier than the Bay, so the drying effect is stronger. A quick fresh-water rinse at the outdoor shower before you drive home makes more difference than most people think.

Rinse early, moisturize often, enjoy every September wave. See you in October.
