Pollen, hives, and the spring itch

Why your skin can itch even without a rash this month, plus an honest take on antihistamines, oat baths, and when to call a clinician.

    April 2026

April on Delmarva is peak tree pollen season - oak, pine, and birch all release at once on warm windy days. The itch comes from histamine release in the skin, not from anything touching it. You can feel miserable without a single visible bump, and standard bug-bite cream will not help because the trigger is airborne, not on your skin.

What it looks and feels like

    • Generalized skin itch without a rash, especially on the arms, neck, and face after being outside.
    • Small raised hives that appear and fade within hours, often after a gusty afternoon.
    • Eyes water, nose runs, and the roof of the mouth itches - classic seasonal allergy symptoms that spill over into the skin.

    What to do right now

    • Take a non-drowsy antihistamine like cetirizine or loratadine daily during peak pollen weeks, not just when symptoms show up.
    • Shower and change clothes as soon as you come inside - pollen settles on hair, jackets, and collar lines.
    • Rinse your nose with saline spray before bed; less nasal congestion means less histamine floating around your system.
    • An oatmeal bath or a colloidal oat lotion calms irritated skin without adding fragrance or chemicals.
    • Limit outdoor time between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on dry, windy days when pollen counts spike.
    • If hives last more than 24 hours, or you get swelling of the lips or eyes, see a clinician - that is beyond standard seasonal allergy.

    Local note

On the Peninsula, April's pollen mix is heavy on oak and pine. The inland counties - Kent, Queen Anne's, and Caroline - tend to get higher tree pollen than the immediate coast because the ocean breeze pushes some of it inland. Check the pollen forecast before a long yard-work session.

The pollen will pass. See you in May.
